TECHNICAL NOTES

This CD-ROM has been constructed using Microsoft FrontPage® 2000 & WebCompiler®
Version 3.3 - MIBEC Enterprises, ©Ed Cumming.

NOTE:  To use this compiled version you must have installed Windows Internet Explorer version 4 or higher, running on a 32-bit version of Windows on the Intel platform.  It does not function with the Mac® computer.

Load the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.  Using Windows Explorer open 'Earl of Abergavenny.exe' as you would a normal .exe file by double clicking it.  The application will open.  Note:  On most computer systems, particularly those with Windows®XP, the CD-ROM should auto start.

You can operate directly from the CD-ROM drive or you can load the .exe file temporarily (or permanently)  onto your hard drive.  The program works in a very similar way to Windows Internet Explorer.

Loading the file is recommended if you have enough space.  It speeds up the opening and closing of the various pages.  It will certainly speed up the opening and closing of the illustrations.  You will need about 270 megabytes free on your hard drive.  Simple to remove.

SEARCHING

The advantage with WebCompiler® is that it has its own Search Engine.  This can be found on the main menu bar at the top.  Clicking the 'Search' icon will open the Search Box on the left-hand side of the screen.  Enter the search request into the box provided, remember to select were you wish to search i.e. 'Titles Only', 'Keywords' or 'All Text', then click on the second 'Search' button within the small dialogue box to initiate the search.  'All Text' is the most useful.  Clicking once on the page(s) located by the search will hyperlink directly to the page identified.  The selected word(s) will be highlighted in yellow. To remove the results of a search from this facility click on the results box with the 'right' mouse button and click the resulting dialogue box with the 'left' mouse button.

Once you have opened the page you can continue the search using the Internet Explorer EDIT facility on the Menu Bar.  Click EDIT and go to 'Find on this page'

Close the WebCompiler® search facility when not required to maximise the screen width.  If this search facility or program should crash, restart the application.

GENERAL NOTES

To maximise the screen width there are no navigation buttons in the left-hand edge, only those under the BANNER at the top of the screen.  There are however plenty of additional hyperlinks to return you to the CONTENTS page and other 'book-marked' areas within the text.  These hyperlinks are coloured and underlined.

The CD-ROM was formatted to use 'Medium' text from the Internet Explorer's browser 'Font' menu.  Use the other options within this menu to increase or decrease the text size.  'Larger' is often ideal for reading the Historical Record and larger sections of text.  The display is optimised for 800 by 600 pixels but performs well at higher resolutions.  Greater screen size can be achieved by closing the Tool & Status bars.  Back & Forward can still be operated from 'Go' on the menu bar and 'BACKSPACE will act as a 'BACK' button.  'Font' will be found in the 'View' menu.  Minor formatting errors can occur from time to time, this is normally due to the reading of the HTML files by the Internet Explorer's browser.

In order not to clutter the text and to speed page change, most of the illustrations are shown as 'Thumbnails',  or 'Hyperlinks', click on these and the browser will display the full size image.  Remember to use the browser's BACK button to return to the text.  Many additional photographs, particularly in the 'FINDS' section, are available from the illustration library.  These can be accessed where you see [LIBRARY] or other underlined descriptions in the appropriate colours.  Notes & Reference numbers within the squared brackets [ ] operate in both directions.

Many of the illustrations are of a reasonable quality (i.e. high resolution 'jpeg' or 'gif'  files) so be patient if you have an older computer.

Since this project is on going it is likely that there will be updated versions of this CD-ROM.  When you purchase a copy you can register, if you wish, with;

Weymouth Underwater Archaeological Group (Previously Chelmsford Underwater Archaeological Unit)
@ 4, Golden Bay, Thorofare, St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, TR21 0LN, UK.
E-mail:  edcumming@clara.co.uk
You will be eligible for updates at a nominal price (£1) when they become available.  Update information & errata will also be available on the CD-ROM page of www.weymouthdiving.co.uk   There is also a feedback facility on these sites.  Any technical difficulties with the CD-ROM contact Ed Cumming at the address above or by E-mail.  The CD-ROM is guaranteed for one year and will be replaced at a nominal charge if damaged by the original purchaser.  Browser only versions of this CD-ROM (i.e. non compiled, CD-ROM based web) are available on request.

If you would like to study any of the finds or contribute to future editions of this CD-ROM, we would be very pleased to hear from you.  Your contribution, if added, will be appropriately acknowledged in the text.

ADDITIONAL BROWSER VERSION - AVAILABLE ON REQUEST

A browser version (CD-ROM based web) is included on some of the CD-ROM's so that you can take advantage of the latest browser versions like Internet Explorer 7 (IE7).  Image size control, a feature of IE6, does not unfortunately work with the WebCompiler®  version.  The browser version does not, however, have search facility apart from the 'Page' search available from the EDIT menu on the browser Toolbar.  IE6 is provided as a free download from Microsoft.

COPYRIGHT

Please respect the copyright of the illustrations used in this CD-ROM.  Feel free to use any of the illustrations which are attributed to Ed Cumming or are WUAG copyright, however be sure to acknowledge them if any are reproduced.  All the photographs are attributed to Ed Cumming unless otherwise indicated.
